CNN’s Cari Champion Ridiculed Over ‘Free Speech Won’t Be as Free’ Comment
During a recent roundtable discussion, CNN’s Cari Champion expressed concern about the future of free speech under a potential Trump administration. She claimed, “I do believe that we are not going to be able to be as safe or say what we want to. I don’t think free speech is going to be as free.” Her comments were quickly met with widespread skepticism and ridicule.
Champion asked others at the table if they were still using the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), seemingly expecting solidarity in her criticism of the platform. To her surprise, everyone present confirmed that they were still using it, leaving Champion visibly taken aback.
The irony of Champion’s attempt to rally support against X, only to find that her peers continued to use it without hesitation, did not go unnoticed. Scott Jennings, a conservative commentator present during the discussion, reacted with skepticism, an expression that quickly went viral, symbolizing the disbelief many felt towards Champion’s claims.
Critics argue that Champion’s statements are out of touch with reality and serve to distract from the actual threats to free speech seen under the current Biden-Harris administration. Independent voices have frequently highlighted how mainstream media has worked to control narratives and silence dissenting opinions during recent years. This includes censoring certain news stories and de-platforming individuals who do not align with the preferred narrative of the establishment.
Alternative media figures like Glenn Greenwald and Project Veritas have repeatedly pointed out examples of censorship and bias. Greenwald, who left The Intercept due to editorial censorship, has become a vocal critic of how the mainstream media suppresses information that challenges the establishment. Similarly, Project Veritas has exposed numerous instances where major tech and media platforms have actively censored or manipulated information to control public perception.
These examples highlight the real suppression that critics argue is taking place under the current administration—not the hypothetical scenario that Champion fears under Trump. For many, Trump’s stance against censorship is what allows platforms like X to continue thriving as spaces for open and diverse dialogue.
Champion’s inability to rally support among her peers underscored the disconnect between mainstream media figures and the general public. Despite her dire warnings, people continue to exercise their right to free speech on platforms like X, which remains a hub for diverse viewpoints.
