Other protesters shouted at Homan about the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after his green card was revoked over his leadership of pro-Hamas protests at Columbia University. United States District Judge Jesse Furman of the Southern District of New York issued an injunction blocking Khalil’s deportation Tuesday.

Following the Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel by the terrorist group Hamas, protesters have taken over several college campuses in the U.S., occupying buildings, chanting anti-Israel slogans and blocking Jewish students from parts of campus. Several anti-Israel protests took place at Columbia University.

In response, the Trump administration warned colleges that failure to prevent harassment of Jewish students could result in consequences. The State Department has also warned that students residing in the U.S. on a visa who express support for terrorist organizations are at risk of deportation.

“Don’t you believe in the First Amendment?” another protester shouted at Homan on Wednesday.

Homan has led the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration enforcement, arresting and deporting violent criminals who resided in the U.S. illegally.

Republicans in the New York state legislature introduced a bill in the state assembly and state senate that would require state officials to notify ICE when non-citizens are arrested for misdemeanors. The bill mirrors the Laken Riley Act, which Trump signed into law on Jan. 29.

Over 200,000 migrants have arrived in New York City since 2022, the New York Times reported, prompting Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams to announce a number of budget cuts in November 2023.
